A letter to my Baby Mama

Dearest Birth Mom,

I can’t imagine how it feels to hold this letter in your hand and know that the person on the other end of this letter wants to love and adore and raise the baby you’re about to have. I can hardly believe it myself. I have always known I wanted to be a mother, and I always knew I wanted to have a baby and adopt a child. Time and destiny have a funny way of rearranging your plans and here I am at the age I am and am finally ready to bring home your baby and be the mother I’ve always wanted to be.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m Irina! My friends call me Rina, or E. As of today I am 42 years old and am a writer and artist. I grew up in Orlando, Florida and while I’ve lived all over the US and Canada, I somehow always end up back in my hometown. Life is funny that way. Anyways, I work as a technical writer. People always ask me what that means, basically I know about all the hardware and software and I write and edit content that helps people use and troubleshoot their stuff. I’ve been working at home for 5 years and I love it! I get up in the morning, run some errands, go swimming or biking, and then set up in front of my computer in my home office and listen to music all day while I write and nerd out over English grammar and technology.

Speaking of working from home, I just bought my very first home in the perfect neighborhood to raise our baby. I got a brand new 4-bedroom townhouse in Orlando in a gated neighborhood with only 91 other families. The neighborhood is basically just a small square with a park right outside my backyard and a community pool in one corner. I love swimming and I look forward to sharing my love of that with our baby.

When I’m not working, I love going to Disney (I have an annual pass) or going on Disney cruises, and I especially love to travel. Growing up I was fortunate to have been able to travel all over Europe, South, and Latin America. Travel has been the biggest influence on my life. I think having met so many people from so many cultures and walks of life just made me really open minded and accepting and adventurous. I started traveling when I was young and I can’t wait to share that family tradition with our baby. I also got a Disney Vacation Club membership so that I can take our baby to Hawaii once a year – I love Hawaii so much and LILO and Stitch is one of my favorite Disney movies. Whenever I watch it I can’t help but identify with LILO, Stitch, and Nani.

I kind of feel like I’m a bit of a renaissance girl. I have always been involved with playing music, making art, writing poetry and short stories, sewing, crafting, and at the same time very much into technology. When I was a little girl my grandpa brought home a computer and taught me to program in BASIC. Ever since then I have loved how computers and technology work and how I can make them do something as long as I can use logic. Siri is my home girl!

I also love video games. My grandpa was a technical engineer and wrote lots of patents that led to the cathode ray tube (the old school TV set) and also developed training systems for the Navy (the simulators are like video games). It’s funny because I didn’t actually have any gaming systems while I was growing up but as soon as I went to college I got myself a Gameboy and I now have all the Nintendo systems. People like to act like video games are bad for kids but I think the right games can teach logic, critical thinking, and hand eye coordination. I think video games and games in general (like board games and card games) can also teach cooperative learning which is super important for people of all ages but especially kids. I’m totally looking forward to sharing my love of all games with our baby.

Most of all I just want to give our baby a loving family. I am fortunate that I have some of the best friends in the world. While my mother and grandparents have both passed away (and my father was not around), I have wonderful friends and even friends parents who are looking forward to standing in as grandparents for our baby.

I can’t wait to meet you and get to know you. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about me and my village of friends.

Much love,
